Easily estimate the time required to download a file or a group of files with known size and an internet connection of a given bandwidth (a.k.a. speed). Estimate the download ETA and learn when the download will complete. The calculator accepts input in MB, GB, TB, and others, and bandwidth in mbps, gbps, tbps, etc. Quick navigation: Using the download time calculatorHow to calculate download timeHow long will it take to download?Frequently asked questions Can I speed up my download speed? What affects download / upload times? Why my downloads take a longer than the estimated time?Does it matter what type of file(s) are being downloaded? Using the download time calculator To use the calculator and esimate the required time for a download or upload, as well as the download ETA, two parameters need to be known: the internet speed (a.k.a. connection bandwidth) as well as the size of the file or files that are to be downloaded or uploaded. The download size may vary from several megabytes to gigabytes to terabytes or petabytes. In most cases the file size will be visible either in the download interface, or in the file system manager that you are using (e.g. Windows Explorer on Windows machines). The size is typically given in MB, GB, TB, or PB as conventionally understood. However, it may also be in SI units with the same names which in fact denote smaller sample sizes. If the size is displayed in both MB and MiB, in GB and in GiB, in TB and TiB, then it means that the first unit is a SI unit, whereas the second one is the classic. You can decide what unit to use as input, but make sure to flip the "use SI standard" checkbox if using SI units instead of the classic ones Convert terabytes to gigabytes to megabytes!MB to kB, GB to TB or MB to GB and much, much more. Or, without the abbreviations, how many gigabytes are in a terabyte? First, you need to understand what a byte is, then it's super simple to know the difference between MB to kB or MB to GB.A byte (B) is the smallest unit of digital information. It is how we humans measure and quantify information online. A byte is a unit of digital information that consists of eight bits (b). Bits (b) are even smaller than bytes, but a byte is as small as you need to go for most tech users. A file comprises so many bytes–the more bytes, the bigger the file. 1 byte (B) = 8 bits (b)A kilobyte (kB) is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. The International System of Units (SI) prefix kilo represents 1,000, so one kilobyte equals around 1,000 bytes. Kilobytes are denoted by the globally accepted unit symbol kB. 1 kilobyte (kB) = 1000 bytes (B)A megabyte (MB) is a multiple of the digital informational unit byte. The unit symbol for the megabyte is MB. The unit prefix mega represents one million in the International System of Units (SI). As a result, one megabyte is equal to about one million bytes of data. 1 megabyte (MB) = 1,000 kilobytes (kB)A gigabyte (GB) is a widely-used multiple of the digital informational unit byte. According to SI, the prefix giga

How long will it take to download over a 100 mbps connection? We can convert 100 mbps to GB/s (it is 11.92 MB/s), or convert 200GB to megabits, then divide the size by the bandwidth. If this is GB as in classic Gigabytes and not SI gigabytes, then that will be 287 minutes or 4 hours and 46 minutes. Here are some example download times for a file with a size of 200 MB, 2 GB, 20 GB, 200 GB, and 1 TB over a 50 mbps, 100 mbps, and 1 gbps connection: Time to download files over an internet connection Download sizeDownload time at 50 mbps (~6 MB/s)Download time at 100 mbps (~12 MB/s)Download time at 1 gbps (~120 MB/s) 200 MB 1 minute 30 seconds 2 seconds 2 GB 6 minutes 3 minutes 17 seconds 20 GB 57 minutes 28 minutes 3 seconds 200 GB 9 hours 33 minutes 4 hours 46 minutes 29 minutes 1 TB 48 hours 52 minutes 24 hours 26 minutes 2 hours 27 minutes The time durations are rounded to the nearest minute or second. The same times apply for uploads given that the same connection bandwidth is available for upload, which is often not the case as ISP typically provide asymmetrical upload/download ratios to match the fact that most users predominantly download and rarely upload. Three OSDs to store data because CRUSH would have no other choice. When more placement groups are available, CRUSH is more likely to evenly spread objects across OSDs. CRUSH also evenly assigns placement groups to OSDs. As long as there are one or two orders of magnitude more placement groups than OSDs, the distribution should be even. For instance, 256 placement groups for 3 OSDs, 512 or 1024 placement groups for 10 OSDs, and so forth. The ratio between OSDs and placement groups usually solves the problem of uneven data distribution for Ceph clients that implement advanced features like object striping. For example, a 4 TB block device might get sharded up into 4 MB objects. The ratio between OSDs and placement groups does not address uneven data distribution in other cases, because CRUSH does not take object size into account. Using the librados interface to store some relatively small objects and some very large objects can lead to uneven data distribution. For example, one million 4K objects totaling 4 GB are evenly spread among 1000 placement groups on 10 OSDs. They will use 4 GB / 10 = 400 MB on each OSD. If one 400 MB object is added to the pool, the three OSDs supporting the placement group in which the object has been placed will be filled with 400 MB + 400 MB = 800 MB while the seven others will remain occupied with only 400 MB. 3.3.3. Resource Usage For each placement group, OSDs and Ceph monitors need memory, network and CPU at all times, and even more during recovery. Sharing this overhead by clustering objects within a placement group is one of the main reasons placement groups exist. Minimizing the number of placement groups saves significant amounts of resources. 3.4. PG Count The number of placement groups in a pool plays a significant role in how a cluster peers, distributes data and rebalances. Small clusters don’t see as many performance improvements compared to large clusters by increasing the number of placement groups. However, clusters that have many pools accessing the same OSDs might need to carefully consider PG count so that Ceph OSDs use resources efficiently. Red Hat recommends 100 to 200 PGs per OSD. 3.4.1. PG Calculator The PG calculator calculates the number of placement groups for you and addresses specific use cases. The PG calculator is especially helpful when using Ceph clients like the Ceph Object Gateway where there are many pools typically using the same rule (CRUSH hierarchy). You might still calculate PGs manually using the guidelines in PG Count for Small Clusters and Calculating PG Count. However, the PG calculator is the preferred method of calculating PGs. To calculate required storage space for cameras, you only need to know two things: The average bit rate, and the amount of time. Then multiply them together with Google, being careful to use the correct units. The Correct UnitsWhen describing streaming bit rates and network speed, we typically use "bits" per second. Bits is represented by a lower case 'b'. Hard drive capacity is usually discussed in "bytes" abbreviated with a capital 'B'. Don't confuse them. People get this wrong all the time. Even internet providers.Mbps = megabits per second. Typically used for describing internet and LAN speeds or audio and video bit rates.MB/s = megabytes per second. Typically used for describing hard drive or SSD speed and file transfer rates.MB = megabyte (1 million bytes)Mb = megabit (1 million bits)1 byte = 8 bitsHow to Calculate Disk Space RequirementsThe easiest way is to just use our calculator by clicking here.To truly master this, read on:Single CameraFor this example, we will calculate the required disk space to store one day's worth of video from one 8MP camera. Assuming we run it at 15 FPS, an appropriate bit rate might be around 8 Mbps. To calculate the required storage space for 1 day of video, we just multiply the bit rate by the amount of time. Correct calculation: 8 Mbps * 1 day Incorrect calculation: 8 MBps * 1 dayMultiple CamerasNow lets assume you have 8 of these cameras. You can just multiply by 8 to get results for 8 cameras.8 Mbps * 1 day * 8 = 691.2 gigabytesDifferent Time SpansOf course 1 day isn't very long. Lets assume you want to record for a week.8 Mbps * 1 week * 8 = 4.8384 terabytesOther CalculationsYou can do other neat things too, like take a hard drive size and divide by a bit rate. Lets assume you have a 6 TB drive and 8 cameras streaming 8 Mbps each.6 TB / (8 Mbps * 8) = 8.68 daysOf course we all know that formatted, usable capacity is always lower than the advertised capacity. You usually get to store around 90% of the advertised capacity. So we can improve the accuracy of the calculation:(6 TB * .9) / (8 Mbps * 8) = 7.81 daysHikvision Bit Rate ChartMotion-triggered recording environments can usually retain video for months, if not years, using one modestly sized hard drive, so in such a situation there is little reason not to use the maximum possible bit rate on all your cameras. However for continuous-recording, it is often necessary to limit your bit rates in order to attain the desired retention time, and it can be difficult for users to decide what bit rate is appropriate.Hikvision has published a chart of recommended bit rates which they felt would deliver good video quality at various resolutions and frame rates. Feel free to go higher or lower to suit your needs, or ignore this chart altogether.
