The Salt Lake County Library Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Joey McNamee as director of the County Library. After a national search, the Library Board voted in favor of the appointment at their June 2024 meeting, and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson has ratified the decision. Joey McNamee replaces Jim Cooper, who retired in February after 23 years. McNamee has been serving in an interim capacity as the Library director since February.“With two decades of experience at different state and county departments, Joey has demonstrated a deep interest in the needs and services of our residents,” Mayor Wilson said. “I am thrilled that her dedication to public service has found a place at Salt Lake County Library.”McNamee holds a Bachelors degree from Miami University and Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah. McNamee was appointed as the Associate Director for the Salt Lake County Community Services department in 2022 after working in Salt Lake County’s Aging and Adult Services division for more than a decade, most recently as the Associate Division Director. McNamee has served as Interim Director of the County Library since February 2024, overseeing operations, strategic planning, and preparations for new library branches that will begin in 2025.“Searching for a new Director can be a challenging process, but we were pleased with the quality of applicants interested in the Salt Lake County Library and all we offer to Salt Lake County residents,” said Spencer Romney, chair of the Salt Lake County Library board. “In just a short time Joey has shown her strengths as a leader and her extensive knowledge and expertise; we can’t wait to see how her strategy and planning fulfill the Library’s mission.”The County Library opened its doors in 1939, and since then has expanded to be the largest library system in Utah with 18 full-service branches, reading rooms in Alta and South Main Clinic, the Viridian Event Center, and service in the Salt Lake County Jail. The County Library is one of the ten highest circulating libraries in North America checking out almost 13 million items a year, and more than 2/3rds of Salt Lake County households have an active library card.“The County Library is a beloved part of Salt Lake County, and I’m honored to take part in that legacy,” Joey McNamee said. “In my time here I’ve been impressed and motivated by the staff and their drive to serve County residents. As the cold north and north-west winds blow across the lake, the difference in temperature between the warm waters and the cool air often form clouds that form precipitation downwind of the lake. These precipitations are generally heaviest from the Eastern Tooele County into Central Davis County.The lake-effect snowfalls typically occur in late fall, early winter and early spring.
