Tried all the on-line help but the scanner just wouldn't work. The 'Scan a Document or Photo' button on the HP Printer Assistant didn't work and the printer would not scan from the menu on it's own interface.Tried everything and all the HP doctor stuff. Took 4 hours yesterday and 4 hrs again today.See the first post Scanning/Faxing and Copying section about Windows 11 problems. The guidance from HP was to pull the power cable with the printer still on. Then press and hold power button to fully clear any stored energy in the system. Pulled the power cable, waited 2-3 mins, pressed Power button for a minute and plugged the printer direct to the wall outlet (it was in an extension). Reinstalled the basic driver software from Print/Scan Doctor and ... it works. Just printed and scanned ok. Couldn't get Smart Scan app to work though. It installs but won't boot. The start screen comes on for a few seconds then just goes off again. So now have 'HP Envy 5540 series : HP Printer Assistant' working. Funny though, it. HP Envy 4512 All-in-one; product No. K9h49A RE: Direct Wifi connection from Windows 10 Home Ver. 1903 (OS build 18362.418)1. This Direct Wifi connection worked perfectly in the past. Since Windows update ver. 1903 (maybe related, maybe no?), setup of Direct Wifi flawless EXCEPT for one thing. HP Envy 4512 remains OFFLINE, "Not connected"2. Worked on this issue for two (2) days trying various online recommendations and running both Windows and HP troubleshooting. Most of the time useless since printer is OFFLINE, "Not connected"3. Direct Wifi is running from printer. Windows 10 computer sees the Direct Wifi network in "Available Networks"4. I have RESET printer, move printer USB connection to different port on host computer. No help. The other computer trying to connect to HP Envy 4512 Direct Wifi NO JOY!5. This is frustrating because there are no helpful error messages for guidance and troubleshooting software useless.I repeat....Direct Wifi on same printer and same accessing computer ALL THE SAME except for recent Windows update...though who can say if Windows update broke ability to connect to Direct Wifi printer??I have not tried standing on my head and holding my nose...do you think that might help? Thanks. Edit 10.12.2019: I will leave Direct Wifi Printer (HP Envy 4512) set up on the other computer even though not connecting to printer. Maybe one day soon, the OTHER computer will finally be able to "connect" to the HP Envy 4512 like it used to do just a little while ago before Windows Updates 1903_etc. Who knows, but I have to walk away from this for time being.

Change your HP Envy Printer Dirver to the HP Envy 4500 Series. I'm in Windows 10, 64 bit but it should be the same in 32 bit.1. Open Control Panel by typing Control Panel in the Cortana search box. Choose Devices and Printers.2. Right Click on your HP Envy printer and select Printer Properties3. In properties click on the Advanced tab4. Now click on New Driver then click Next in the popup window5. In the next dialogue window choose HP in the left pane then scroll down to find HP Envy 4500 series Class Driver (they're in alphabetical order so the HP Envy drivers are just after the Deskjets).6. Choose Next, Apply and CloseAfter many frustrating hours and several calls to HP Support, this seems to have solved my problem. Duplex works fine, color printing works fine and the driver now displays the option to print in Grayscale or Color.
