Abbey Road runs roughly northwest to southeast through St. John's Wood, near Lord's Cricket Ground. The postcode of the 0.9 mile road is NW8 and the road is in the boroughs of City of Westminster and Camden. How to get to the Abbey Road crossing? Take the London Underground to St John’s Wood station, which is on the Jubilee Line (the grey line). It is a short slightly downhill walk from the station to the zebra crossing. As you come out of the station cross Finchley Road and walk down Grove End Road until you reach the Memorial of Onslow Ford. Turn to your right and you will see the iconic zebra crossing. The Abbey Road trick On the other side of London, in Docklands there is a Docklands Light Railway station also known as Abbey Road. Each year many tourists end up wasting their cash and time travelling to the wrong end of London. In 2018 there were 1,171 journeys made from Abbey Road DLR station to St John's Wood tube station and it is estimated that the majority of these journeys are made by confused Beatles fans. What is Abbey Road so famous? Fifty years ago, The Beatles crossed Abbey Road for a photograph which became their album cover. The album was also called Abbey Road and was the last recorded album by the English rock band, released in 1969. When was the iconic Abbey Road photo taken? The photograph was taken on the morning of Friday 8 August 1969 by photographer Iain Macmillan. The album cover photo was Paul McCartney’s idea and Abbey Road studios have published a copy of McCartney’s original sketch. The Abbey Road legacy lives on In more recent times the iconic zebra crossing has seen many tourists, Beatles fans, celebrities and television characters recreating the same famous Beatles walk.
